Wild Wave Studies

Available on Verse – https://verse.works/series/wild-wave-studies-by-ralgo

Wild Wave Studies represents my ongoing exploration of chaotic forces through the application of generative code techniques. Stemming from earlier experiments into enhancing the style of my Artblocks collection (Seasky), this project continues the trajectory of my creative journey. Each piece within this collection has undergone a process which begins with a generative code created image. The resulting output is then subjected to modifications induced by a spectrum of AI settings and prompts.

The appeal of this technique is that it enables me to capture moments of chaos that are difficult to capture through generative code alone. What intrigues me further is the poetic resonance found in the introduction of additional chaos through the incorporation of AI processes, which plays back to the conceptual foundation of collection.

I have remained faithful to the Turneresque theme that initially captivated me during the development of Seasky. I found this particularly appropriate for a study into wave imagery and it has allowed the collection to uphold a consistent aesthetic. However, the addition of diverse external influences proved instrumental in adding richness to the pieces. I ran experiments on numerous historical artistic styles and ultimately gravitated towards elements inspired by Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Salvador Dali. These now feature prominently in the collection.

For Wild Wave Studies I generated over 5000 candidate images. I have curated this down to my choice of 50, which I hope collectors and viewers will find interesting and emotive.

Seasky

Seasky (Oct 2023) is the result of experiments on generative light, sea and clouds to create dramatic (and slightly surreal) seascapes. First the light covers the canvas, then the clouds cover the light (sometimes the light challenges back) and then the sea rolls over. Birds, noise and reflections sometimes add to the scenes.

I have written some companion notes to Seasky to give more insights. You can see the whole collection of 100 here https://www.artblocks.io/collections/presents/projects/0x99a9b7c1116f9ceeb1652de04d5969cce509b069/459

Seasky Aria

Seasky Aria takes Seasky to the next level using a combination of Artist curation and AI modifications. Each Seasky from the Art Blocks drop has been reimagined using various AI and image manipulation tools to create beautifully unreal seascapes designed specifically for digital screens in 4k format.

The full set of 4k Seasky Arias will be available for free download on this website in December 2023. They will also form an NFT collection with each piece given to the owners of their corresponding Seasky at the time of the Snapshot to be taken at a time during December.

Order v Chaos (Overgrowth III)

https://verse.works/exhibitions/ordervchaos-imperfections – Feb 2023

The works represent a simplified battle between natural chaos and the human need to strive for order and control. This project is essentially a follow on from the Overgrowth series on FxHash. It uses colour for the first time and introduces ordered elements to compete with growing chaotic forces.

Here is the interview I did with Verse with respect to this collection https://verse.works/journal/ralgo-on-celebrating-chaotic-forces

Quantum Places Lost In Time

A frozen scene from a lost dimension
An alternative of where we once were, or where we will be
Caught in the moment and set in place
Between all states
Static pixels on a digital canvas

The path to this collection has created many alternatives lost in time themselves. It began as a study of points of light, with geometric objects in the background. The background objects developed a life of their own and then birds, and ships, made out of bezier shapes became the focal points. Then everything got lost in clouds before the collection as it stands now emerged. Aside from the published traits, many of the artifacts created on the way are still generated. For example, star fields, birds, sonars and gas bubbles. These are sometimes visible, but when they appear, it is simply by some chaotic chance.

Continuum

Continuum is a combination of 2d and 3d random walks in colour and space.

Overgrowth

Overgrowth is an exploration of random growth focused on three interconnected elements. The first is a randomly moving brush, the second is one is an alternating overlay of white and black circles along bezier points between brush movements, and the final one being a continually decreasing brush size.

The overall result gives a complex scribble art effect.

Overgrowth x8

Overgrowth was an experiment in mixed brushes, and random walks, to create complex scribble landscapes. Overgrowth X8 takes the concept a number of steps forward.

The first change is that there are 8 brush heads rather than 1. The starting location of these brush heads have been curated into 6 sets.

a) Four Corners – 2 brush heads emanating from each corner,
b) All Together Now – All brush heads starting at the same low central location,
c) Great Monument (sometimes),
d) Upon this Slope, these structures are built,
e) Heaven and Earth – 4 brush heads at the top and 4 at the bottom, sometimes they meet,
f) Random Landscaper – All brush heads randomly placed in the lower part of the canvas.

Each brushes white ellipses are now a randomised shade of very light grey. This gives slightly more depth.

As the brushes usually do not randomly fill the whole canvas, there is a background that has been built to be consistent with the drawing, rather than just using a solid color or mono light bands.

White and black stroke sizes have been adapted to give a slightly wider range of effects.

Tails of Majestic Creatures

Excerpt from the Annuls of WoSAGE (the Worshipful Society of Adventurers and Generative Explorers) XXVII.Vol.2048

Some of the fantastically coloured reeds that grow in clumps along the banks of the Tezonian river have profoundly affected the local inhabitants culture and beliefs.

Legend tells of how there lived majestic creatures, that were so beautiful, and dazzling, that they greatly offended Nocturna – the Deity of the Night. After many unsuccessful attempts to get rid of them, usually foiled by the Majestic Creatures in elaborate, and clever ways, Nocturna cast a powerful spell upon them. This spell was extremely effective and made them plummet, with great speed, into the ground leaving only their tails to show.

The creatures then turned their energy to nature, and joined as one to become a deity of the natural world. They rise and protect creatures from harm – especially during the night.

The reeds (tails) are held as sacred, and believed to have healing powers.

I have created this graphical study of the tails (exotic reeds) for your informational requirements and ocular interest.

128 images are planned to follow henceforth, subject to available minters.”

Exploratories

These images are the results of combining and recombining numerous mathematical functions over a plane on red, green and blue channels.

The extreme randomness has not been tamed, and quality generations can take time, so they have not been released into a generative format as yet. However, it is my ambition to mould these into a coherent and special collection in due course.

Fictional Cityscapes Collection

This collection is the product of experiments in line art to construct cityscapes with a highly unusual architecture of gradient lines changing width on random levels.

The results show the unpredictable nature of outliers. 128 editions of fictional cityscapes were minted on FxHash.

Festival Collection

Another subset of the Exploratories which took a simplified set of sine waves and created inference between them. It is a study of how waves and colours interact. It was the first project I released on FX Hash and there are 64 Editions.

Parked Project (Working Title : Shards)

This project uses a generative system of lines, shards and waves to produce images that a viewer can use to investigate their own perspectives.

It is a work in progress which has been parked pending more explorations on the underlying formulas.

8×8 Pixel Creatures Collection

Pixel Art is fun. I created a Pixel creature generator as a small graffiti element to include in later iterations of the exchange collection.

I like these guys, so I decided to release 200 editions of them, in different styles, into the wild.
